Sub 7: Competition Flashcards
when does competition occur?
when the two organisms attempt to utilise the same resource
what type of interaction is competition?
a negative/negative interaction as it is detrimental to both organisms - any positive outcome for the winner would have been even greater without the competition
what is exploitation competition?
competitors do not interact directly - one individual uses the resource before the other has the opportunity
give an example of exploitation competition
grey squirrels eat under ripe fruit cause red need to wait tip ripe
what is interference competition?
when the behaviour of one competitor prevents the other from accessing the resource
what is fundamental niche?
set of resources an organism is capable of using in the absence of competition
what is a realised niche?
set of resources a species can actually make use of in an ecosystem in presence of competition
what is competitive exclusion principle?
when two different species have the same realised niche and so cannot coexist in a community for a length of time - one will die out
what is resource partitioning?
overlapping niches, dividing up the resources in an ecosystem through species specialisation and adaptation to exploit different components of the ecosystems resources
name examples of exotic species?
rhododendron, mink, ruddy duck
