Sub #1 Confirmed Constructed Responses Flashcards
Read an excerpt from “Gift from the Sea” by Anne M. Lindberg.
“The shell in my hand is deserted. It once housed a whelk, a snail-like creature, and then temporarily, after the death of the first occupant, a little hermit crab, who has run away, leaving his tracks behind him like a delicate vine on the sand. He ran away, and left me his shell. It was once a protection to him. I turn the shell in my hand, gazing into the wide open door from which he made his exit. Had it become an encumbrance ? Why did he run away ? Did he hope to find a better home, a better mode of living ? I too have run away, I realize, I have shed the shell of my life, for these few weeks of vacation.”
Describe the setting and characterization in the excerpt based on tone and word choice.
The excerpt from “Gifts from the Sea” by Anne m. Lindberg is an essay style piece. Lindberg uses personal details of her journey through everyday life to show readers the complexity of each stage of life.
Each stage of life untangles real world connections in Lindberg’s journey that revolves around the relationships she has had with herself, as a women and those around her.
Lindberg uses the metaphor of a crab leaving it’s shell, in comparison to her husband leaving her and union they had once committed to through marriage. This metaphor Lindberg created allows readers to be apart of her journey as she tries to cope and reflect on her husband leaving and the new chapter that is starting in her life. This allows her to convey real emotions to her audience. Her tone is continuously reflective and calm giving readers a sense of hope and enlightenment.
At the end of the excerpt Lindberg states that she has shed her shell for a few weeks on vacation, which is another metaphor that conveys to readers that she is leaving her problems in the past, and behind her. Foreshadowing this message allows her
readers to be introduced to a pathway of solutions for overcoming attachment. The foreshadowing of her leaving her shell behind is showing the audience that she is going to continue to grow and find a new shell. The author does all this by tying in themes about friendship, individualism, spiritual fulfillment, marriage, and coming of age.
4th grade spelling words: time/time, beaches/beches, bought/bot, popped/poped, noze/nose, get/get, snake/snaik. Explain what developmental stage the student is based on the misspelled words
This 4th grade student is in the transitional stage in spelling. In the transitional stage the student is using a single letter and groups of letters to spell sound.
Based on the students artifact above, the student is spelling phonetically because they understand rules such as, silent e, and word endings like es and ed. The student can be further supported in instruction based on vowel digraphs (ee), silent letters in the grapheme (ough), and doubling rule when working with affixes. These rules will support student in spelling words similar to “beaches” and “bought”. For the word “popped” the student could also use the 1-1-1 rule. The base word “pop” can be used as a learning tool to allow the student to determine if we need to have the word be doubled before adding a suffix at the end.
State the causes of the Civil War. Go into detail about one and why it was the major cause of the conflict.
The cause of the Civil War was over the moral issues revolving around slavery and the impacts it had economically and politically.
The economics and political control slavery had over the system was central to conflict. State’s within the U.S had different rights revolving round the moral issue. The Southern states wanted to authority over the federal government in order to gain the power of abolishing federal laws they did not agree with such as, Southerners right to keep slaves and take them wherever they desired to.
The other actor was the territorial expansion. The South wanted to move slavery into Western territories but the new and reformed Republican party opposed the westward expansion of slavery. This made the Southern states feel detached from the political system leading them to a political decision that eventually led to war.

This resulted in the mass diversity of god being worshipped. The sun god was very crucial in Inca religion. They believed that the empires kings were descendants of the sun god. This belief was originated because their kings never really died. The Inca empire also believed that rocks, mountain, and mountains had powers making them perform sacrifice ceremonies, but they barley ever sacrificed humans unlike the Aztec empire.
