Sturcture Of Earth & Plate Boundaries Flashcards
List all features of Earths structure starting from crust.
- Crust
- Asthenosphere
- Mantle
- Outer core
- Inner core
What are the crusts features?
- divided into plates
- two types of crust oceanic plate and continental plate
What are the asthenosphere’s features?
- semi-molten
What are the mantles features?
- from 1000 - 3700 degrees Celsius
-
What is the outer cores features?
- is liquid
What is the inner cores features?
- is solid
- up to 6000 degrees celsius
Difference between continental crust and oceanic crust?
Continental crust is less dense than oceanic crust
What do convection currents do?
Make the plates move
How do convection currents make the plates move?
The rising hot material from the asthenosphere cools down and becomes dense enough so it sinks, this creates movement on the bottom of tectonic plates and causes them to move
What are the three types of plate boundary?
- convergent
- divergent
- conservative
What are convergent boundaries?
Convergent boundaries are when two plates are moving towards each other
What are divergent boundaries?
Divergent boundaries are when two plates are moving away from each other
What are conservative boundaries?
Conservative boundaries are when two plates are moving sideways past each other, or are moving in the same direction but at different speeds
What happens when a continental plate meets a oceanic plate?
The oceanic plate goes down (sub-ducts) and melts into the mantle. The build up of tension between the plates causes earthquakes of different magnitudes. It can also cause ocean trenches where subduction takes place and volcanic eruptions because when the ocean trench melts it adds to the magma in the mantle and causes magma to rise eventually leading to a volcanic eruption.
What happens when a two continental plates meet?
The ground is pushed up and creates mountains
