Q
What is the structure of the adrenal cortex?
A
Outer - Zona glomerulosa (secretes mineralocorticoids, eg aldosterone regulates BP by acting on kidneys)
Middle - Zona fasciculata (makes glucocorticoids eg. cortisone/cortisol, mobilises fats, proteins and carbohydrates but not during starvation)
Inner - Zona reticularis (androgen precursors ie. androstenedione, DHEA, sex steroid hormones etc)

Q
How does the stress response work in terms of the glands etc?
A
First noradrenaline gets you going, then cortical hormones eg aldosterone and cortisol take over
If they’re not released you get stress related problems
