What is personal effectiveness
Personal effectiveness can be described as a combination of skills you bring to any work environment that will assist you in not only getting the job done but for it to be done better that it could ever be done Many components form part of personal effectiveness They do not develop at the same speed To function effectively a person should develop in all instances in order to form a balanced whole
Defining self-awareness
According to Burnard (1992) self-awareness is defined as “the process of getting to know your feelings, attitudes and values. It is also learning about the effect you have on others’
Explaining self-awareness
Self-awareness can be seen to have a major part to play in developing people skills It involves understanding our characteristics responses to situations so that we can build on our positive qualities and be wary of any negative ones which may get in the way of effective practice Self-awareness allows one to have a clear perception of their personality, including strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs, motivation, and emotions Self-Awareness allows you to understand other people, how they perceive you, your attitude and your responses to them in that moment
What are the needs for self-awareness?
Self-awareness brings confidence: gives allowance to operate from a much stronger position Inspires confidence in others: confidence is infectious Promotes the “think-feel-do” framework: being in touch with our feelings helps with being attuned to others’ feelings Promotes unconditional positive regard: non-judgemental attitude which requires self-control & discipline
Helps with recognizing the impact of our behaviour on others: vice versa
Helps in dealing with discrimination & oppression: recognising diversity
Stress management: assists in knowing how one copes with stressful events
Assists with continuous professional development: knowing what you want to learn and the best way to learn it
Success
is defined as the progressive realization of a worthy goal or ideal (Proctor, 2003). Success flows from effectively achieving important goals (Tracy, 2007).
Happiness
is defined as a general sense of satisfaction with life and experiencing more positive than negative emotions (Lyubomirsky, 2008).
Self-esteem
is defined as the value that people place on themselves (Baumeister et., 2003). High (positive) self-esteem therefore refers to a favorable evaluation of the self In contrast , negative self-esteem describes an unfavorable evaluation of the self.
Optimism
is defined as the tendency to be hopeful and confident about oneself and the future
Emotional intelligence
refers to the capacity to reflect and not just react It is about understanding what emotions are and how they develop
Self-efficacy
is defined as the belief in one’s ability to complete a certain task or achieve a specific goal (Bandura, 1997)
