STUDY UNIT 13: Class structure Flashcards
define social mobility
The term
social mobility refers to the movement of individuals and groups between
different socioeconomic positions
what types of social mobility are there
Vertical mobility means movement up or down the
socioeconomic scale or ladder. A worker who becomes a manager for example
is experiencing upward mobility or is upwardly mobile.
If one moves down
the economic scale or ladder, such as a worker who is demoted in his or
her job, then it is called downward mobility.
lateral mobility. This simply means the geographical movement of a
person from one place to another such as when John or Tandiwe moves from
one township to another, from one province to another, or from one country
to another
what kinds of mobility are there
If you look at an individual’s career and how they move up and
down the economic scale in the course of their own working lives we call it
intragenerational mobility.
The other way of studying social mobility is called
intergenerational, for example, when we study how children enter (or do not
enter) the same careers as their fathers and mothers – these studies are
known as intergenerational mobility studies
