Q

How many reported to the police?

A

Only 15 per cent of victims of the serious sexual offences said that they had reported the crime to the police. Due to what we know from victim surveys,
only about 54,000 sexual offences were recorded by the police.

About 5 per cent of adult females reported that they had been a victim of the most serious offences (rape, attempted rape and sexual assault) at some time in their lives above the age of 16 years. About 20 per cent of adult females reported victimisation from any sort of sexual offence in their adult lives.

Q

One notable stat?

A

One notable statistic is that about 90 per cent of the victims of these most serious sexual offences knew the perpetrator, but this figure falls to less than 50 per cent for what the report describes as less serious sexual offences such as indecent exposure and voyeurism.

Q

The Crime Survey for England and Wales

A

The women in the survey and the researchers agreed that the events were rape in about 60 per cent of the cases.

It can be estimated that the number of rapes in England and Wales is somewhere between 60,000 and 95,000 cases on average per year. However, the police only record about 15,670 rapes because of non-reporting by the victim but sometimes because the police do not think that a crime has been committed. The police investigation may not identify a suspect, or the Crown Prosecution Services will decide that there is insufficient evidence. This leaves an average of 3850 potential prosecutions.

As many as two-thirds of victims withdraw.

So only 2910 on average go to trial. The number of offenders finally committed for rape is 1070 although some may have been convicted of another sexual offence.
