Study Quiz 3 Flashcards
Where do organisms get their traits from?
From their parents DNA
Where do you find chromosomes in a Eukaryotic cell?
The Nucleus
What makes up chromosomes?
Tightly coiled DNA
Explain the difference between a gene and a trait.
A gene iis a section of DNA, and a trait is a physical appearence that you inherit from your parents. (Eye & Hair color, Skin tone, etc.)
What does DNA stand for?
Deoxyribonucleic Acid
Which types of cells have a nucleus?
Both animal & plant cells
Where do prokaryotic cells store DNA?
It floats around in the cytoplasm
Define Heredity
Heredity is when you inherit a certain trait from either of your parents, or a trait from both.
Define offspring
Organisms that result from asexual or sexual reproduction
Define trait
A characteristic determined by genes
Define gene
A section of DNA that determines what traits the offspring will have
Define DNA
It is found in all living things, and contains genetic information
Define Chromosome
X-Shaped structure made of tightly coiled DNA
Define Nucleus
The ‘Control Center’ of Animal and Plant cells, it
Where are chromosomes and DNA located in a Eukaryotic cell?
The Nucleus
Define asexual reproduction
When two parents (Male & Female) contribute DNA to produce an offspring
Define a cell
Cells are the basic unit of life, and all living organisms are made up of one or more of them.
Define sexual reproduction
A form of reproduction that produces offspring that results from the combination of chromosomes from 2 parents
What are the two types of reproduction for living organisms?
Sexual & Asexual
How are chromosomes distributed among the offspring of sexual reproducers?
Offspring of sexual reproducers develop from 1/2 chromosomes of female and 1/2 chromosomes of male parents
How are chromosomes distributed among the offspring of asexual reproducers?
The offspring through asexual reproduction is like a clone of the parent, so the chromosomes are the same.
Which of the following determines the pattern and color of a snake’s skin?
A. Nucleus
B. Genes
C. Traits
D. Chromosomes
B. Genes
Describe each part and function of the genetic material in the cell. Your answer must include the definitions and details of the following terms: Cell, Nucleus, Chromosome, DNA, Gene, Trait
In a cell, there are 4 main parts of genetic material in a cell. First, is the Nucleus. Though it is still the control center of the cell, it holds the cells chromosomes and DNA. Mainly in plant and animal cells. DNA determines the genes of the offspring. Depending on the genes, certain traits from the parents are passed to the offspring.
