Cranial Nerve XII
Name:
Hypoglossal (Motor)
Cranial Nerve I
Function:
Olfactory (Sensory)
Olfacation (smell). Only cranial nerve that does NOT go through the thalamus.
Cranial Nerve II
Function:
Optic (Sensory)
Vision and pupillary reaction.
Cranial Nerve III
Function:
Oculomotor (Motor)
Innervates muscles that move the eyeball, also pupillary reaction. Controls most of the eye muscles.
Cranial Nerve IV
Function:
Trochlear (Motor)
Lateral and downward motion of the eye.
Cranial Nerve V
Function:
Trigeminal (Motor/Sensory)
Main sensory nerve of the face and mouth.
Motor function controls muscles of the jaw for chewing.
Cranial Nerve VI
Function:
Abducens (Motor)
Lateral movement of the eye.
Cranial Nerve VII
Function:
Facial (Motor/Sensory)
Sensory: Anterior 2/3 of the tongue’s taste receptors (sweet, salty, sour).
Motor: muscles of facial expression.
Cranial Nerve VIII
Function:
Vestibulocochlear (Sensory)
Hearing and Equilibrium. Damage causes balance disorders.
Cranial Nerve IX
Function:
Glossopharyngeal (Motor/Sensory)
Sensory: posterior 1/3 of the tongue’s taste receptors (bitter).
Motor: stylopharyngeus muscle and parotid gland (salivary gland).
Cranial Nerve X
Function:
Vagus (Motor/Sensory)
Innervation of the pharynx, larynx, visceral organs and abdomen. Most of the parasympathetic system.
Cranial Nerve XI
Function:
Accessory (Motor)
Innervates the larynx, pharynx, trapezius, and sternocleidomastoid. Controls ability to maintain posture of head and neck.
Cranial Nerve XII
Function:
Hypoglossal (Motor)
Innervates tongue muscles.
