Study guide: plants Flashcards
Two functions of plant roots
- Anchor plant in soil
- Absorb water and dissolved minerals from soil, sometimes store foos
two functions of plant stem
- hold leaves up to the sun
- transports materials between the roots and leaves, sometimes stores food
function of plants leaves
-carry out photosynthesis and produce food (glucose) for plant
two types of vascular tissue found in plants
xylem and phloem
explain function and direction of flow of first vascular tissue (by alphabetical order)
phloem
transports food from the leaves to the roots (flows up and down)
explain function and direction of flow of second vascular tissue (by alphabetical order)
xylem
transports water from the roots to the leaves (flows up)
Do plant cells need respiration? why?
yes, they need to break down sugar molecules and release the energy they contain
the enegry is used for life processes
Know how to label parts of flower, for now though know them,
petals stigma style ovary (very bottom of the flower) anther filament sepal (small leaf)
male structures of flower?
Stamen (or the anther and filament
female structures of flower?
pistil (or the stigma, style, or ovary)
need to know where parts of seed are, but know what they are first.
embryo
cotyledon
seed coat
when bean plant matures does it need the cotyledon?
no, because the cotyledon provides food for the growing embryo. when it grows upwards, it will grow leaves that can go through photosynthesis and make its own food
reproductive structure of a gymnosperm?
cone
reproductive structure of an angiosperm
flower
difference between angiosperm and gymnosperm seeds
gymnosperms: naked; no covering
angiosperms: protected by being enclosed in fruit.
