Study Guide Ch. 4 Flashcards
What are the two types of bonds we discussed?
Covalent Bonds and Ionic Bonds
Which type of bond gains or loses electrons?
Ionic Bond
Which type of bond shares electrons?
Covalent Bond
Which type of bond forms molecules?
Covalent Bond
Which type of bond has a high melting point?
Ionic Bond
Which type of bond has a low melting point?
Covalent Bond
Which type of bond can conduct an electrical current and which does not?
Ionic bond does and Covalent does not
Salt is an example of which type of bond?
Ionic Bond
Water is an example of which type of bond?
Covalent Bond
Which type of bond involves a metal and a nonmetal?
Ionic Bond
Which type of bond involves two nonmetals?
Covalent Bond
With ionic bonding, atoms with 1, 2, 3 valence electrons will gain or lose electrons?
Lose
Atoms with 5, 6, 7 will gain or lose electrons?
Gain
What type of ion results when an atom loses electrons?
Positive
What type of ion results when an atom gains electrons?
Negative
How are an atom and an ion different from each other?
Ions have charges and atoms are neutral (no charges)
How are elements listed in rows within the periodic table?
Increasing atomic number
What can be said about the characteristics of the elements in a column of the periodic table?
They are similar
What is a proton?
Small, positively charged particles that are found in the nucleus of an atom
What is a neutron?
The central core of an atom which contains protons or neutrons
What is an electron?
A tiny, negatively charger particle that moves around the outside of the nucleus of an atom
What is an electron dot diagram?
A representation of valence electrons in an atom using dots
What is a molecule?
A neutral group of two or more atoms held together by covalent bonds
What is a chemical bond?
The force of attraction that holds two atoms together
