What is diagnosis?
an understanding of the child’s problem, or the identification of a disorder by analyzing the symptoms presented and when possible their underlying causes
What is assessment/evaluation?
refers to the process of arriving at a diagnosis
What is primary language?
The language the student learned first and used most frequently in early stages of language development
What is dominant language?
the language spoken most proficiently by the student at this time
How do we use a multiple scoring system?
- child answers in english
- child answers in L1
- child’s combined answers in both languages
Why do we use a multiple scoring system?
CLD students often demonstrate language proficiency in L1 in certain content areas and proficiency in L2 (english) in other areas
What is in the first quadrant (normal language learning ability) of the diagnostic pie?
- normal language learning ability
- adequate background
- may need one or more of the following:
1. bilingual education
2. sheltered english
3. instruction in english as a second language
What is in the 2nd quadrant (normal language learning ability) of the diagnostic pie?
limitations of linguistic exposure and environment experience
- may need:
1. bilingual education sheltered english, English as a 2nd language
2. Additional enrichment experiences (tutoring)
What is in the 3rd quadrant (normal language learning disability) the diagnostic pie?
-adequate background
may need:
1. bilingual special education
2. english special education with as much primary language input and teaching as possible
what is in the 4th quadrant (normal language learning disability) of the diagnostic pie?
limitations of linguistic experience and environmental exposure
may need:
1. bilingual special education
2. english special education w/primary language support
3. additional enrichment experiences
