Multidimensional approach to social work
Look at personal, environmental, time dimensions of people to understand them better
Ideology
A particular body of ideas or outlook; a person’s specific worldview.
Operant Conditioning
Behavior is learned as strengthened/weakened by reinforcement.
Positive/Negative reinforcement
Positive reinforcers (smiles, praise) strengthen behavior we find pleasing.
Negative stop or reduce unpleasant behavior.
Absolutistic thinking
Viewing experience as all good/all bad. Failing to understand it can be both.
What might be consequences of absolutistic thinking?
Damages our abilities to compromise with others.
Signal Anxiety
Feeling anxious and that something is going to take place internally that you don’t have control over.
Defense mechanism
Unconcious, auto responses that enable a person to minimize perceived threats or keep them out of awareness entirely.
3 examples of defense mechanisms
Denial, projection, repression
Stress diathesis model of mental disorders
Model based on empirical data indicating certain disorders develop from the interaction of environmental stresses and a diathesis to the disorders. The diatheses may be biological, environmental, or both.
What does Weber mean by power being legitimate?
That it conforms to one’s norms and values.
Why is legitimate power important in a rational, legal organization?
When the exercise of power is seen as legitimate, then the rules of organizations are seen as congruent with the rules of people in the organization.
Organizational goal displacement
The organization substitutes its original goal for another.
What are consequences of organizational goal displacement?
Rules and following rules become more important than providing the services of the organization.
What are the consequences of high economic inequality in U.S.?
Smaller investments in public education & other social supports, higher levels of violence, less trust & more hostility, lower levels of involvement in community life.
