Gifts of the Holy Spirit?
- help us to understand and do what god wants us to do
- 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit are: wisdom, understanding, right judgement, courage, knowledge, reverence, wonder and awe in God’s presence
Fruits of the Holy Spirit?
- The fruits of the Holy Spirit are present when we do God’s will.
- 12 Fruits of the Holy Spirit are: charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self control, chastity
Church?
- Marks of the Church: one, holy, apostolic, Catholic
- “Catholic” means:- universal – the Church is for everyone
- people of every age, social status, nation, race, color, and way of life can be part of the same church
- Our role in the Church and as Catholics: can have different points of view about the purpose of the Church
- Groups/Roles/Purpose in/of the church (what we find important in institution (stability, Church traditions and rules),
- sacrament (a sign of God’s presence in the world, value rituals of the church that express things that words alone cannot express),
- body (gathers people to do things that they could not do alone, working together),
- Servant (care for the needs of the world by helping the poor and working for justice)
- Prophet (to make people think about things they would rather not think about, and to challenge them to be better people)
- Church includes many types of people with a variety of preferences and priorities. The thing that all members of the Church have in common is a love of God and a desire to follow Jesus. The church is a community where all members have a common love of God and longing to follow in Jesus footsteps.
- Evangelization: sharing the “Good News” in order to raise an awareness of God with others
Season in the Church?
- Advent: 4 weeks to prepare our hearts for the coming of Jesus
- Lent: focus on 3 – almsgiving, prayer, fasting
- Easter: 50 days
- Pentecost: 50 days after Easter
The Trinity?
- there is only one God who has been revealed to us in three different persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit
Apostle’s Creed(what does it mean when we say these words….)?
- “I believe in God” : we will not let anything become more important to us than God and what God wants
- “Father Almighty”: God is the perfect parent who always loves us, but who lets us make our own choices
- “Creator of heaven and earth,”: all creation is the work of God; therefore, all creation is good
- I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,”: Jesus is one with God and can help us understand God in a way no other person can
- “conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary: Jesus did not have a father
- “On the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty,”: the resurrected Jesus, who is now with the Father in heaven, is the same Jesus who walked on earth
- “from there he will come to judge the living and the dead,” : Jesus knows things about us that no one else could know He will judge us fairly
- “I believe in the Holy Spirit,” : the Holy Spirit is God who dwells within us and gives the power to change our lives and the world
- “the holy Catholic Church,” : we are called to welcome all people to share the gift of God’s love with them
- “we believe in the communion of saints” : all Christians, living and dead, are connected to each other in Christ
- “in the forgiveness of sins, “ : there is no sin so great that God cannot forgive it, all of us need forgiveness, revenge is wrong
- “the resurrection of the body,” : what we do with our bodies affects our relationship with God
- “life everlasting,” : through his resurrection, Jesus won out over death
- “Amen”: “I believe, I accept, I trust”

- Who are saints? : All people who have seen God’s love for them and responded by loving God and their neighbor
- saints are members of our community; their prayers affect our lives
- all of us are called to be saints
- Christians believe that death cannot destroy the bonds of love and Christian community
- God created human beings for eternal life

Holiness?
- to help people share in the love of God

- Love – is the Greatest Commandment
- A steward is someone who takes care of God’s world
- We are holy when we see and respond to God in both big and small ways
- the Holy Spirit of the Trinity is the source and giver of all holiness
Sacraments?
- sacraments help us to see God
- the Sacraments of Initiation are: Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation; they connect us to God and the Christian community
- the Sacraments of Healing are: Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick
- the Sacraments of Service are: Matrimony (Marriage) and Holy Orders
The Sacraments of Baptism?
- water is the main symbol of baptism
- oil (chrism) is used at Baptism (and Confirmation)
- represents going into the tomb with Jesus and having your old life pass away new life beginning

- bread and wine are gifts of the Creator and the ‘work of human hands’

- oil (chrism) is used at Confirmation – the oil symbolizes the fullness of grace and the gift of the Holy Spirit
- the ‘laying on of hands’ represents the sharing of love, strength, support and encouragement

The Sacrament of Reconciliation?
- helps us turn our lives around and live the way God wants us to live
- helps us repair our relationship with the Christian community– the sacrament that brings God’s healing touch through the Christian community
- is the place where we find forgiveness for mortal (serious) sins
- offers strength and courage to rebuild old relationships that have been broken and to build more positive new relationship
- most common “rite” of Reconciliation today is common preparation with the community, then individual confession to a priest
- absolution - when a priest uses words to reconcile us to God and the community during the sacrament of Reconciliation
- the grace we receive helps us to turn our lives around
The Sacrament of Marriage?
- a man and woman make a covenant: which is a life-long commitment to become “one flesh” and to establish the best atmosphere for raising children
The Sacrament of Holy Orders (Ordination)?
- people who are ordained become Bishops, priests or deacons
- vocation: a call from God to give of one’s self for others
The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick?
- the sacrament that brings God’s healing touch through the Christian community
- given to people who are physically and/or emotionally ill
The Mass?
- Order of the Mass: Gathering (or Introductory Rites), Liturgy of the Word, Liturgy of the Eucharist, Communion Rite, Dismissal Rite (or Concluding Rites)
Introductory Rites?
- the purpose is to gather and welcome
- establishes the ‘theme’ of the Mass
- includes Penitential Rite (asking for forgiveness)
- The Gloria – a prayer praising and thanking God (before Liturgy of Word)
- Liturgy of the Word:
- First Reading: from the Old Testament
- Second Reading: from the New Testament
- Gospel Reading: from the New Testament – one of the four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John)
- Homily: is said by the priest and is an interpretation of the readings (the Word of God) to help us understand better in our time
Liturgy of the Eucharist?
- Preparation and Presentation of the gifts (bread, wine)
- Eucharistic Prayer – is the center and high point of the whole celebration (Mass)
Communion Rite?
- the Lord’s Prayer (Our Father) and the Rite of Peace (sign of peace)
- when we receive the blessed Eucharist we receive the real presence of Jesus Christ
Concluding Rite?
- each person is sent out to do good works, while praising and blessing the Lord
- The Mass is also known as ‘The Liturgy of the Eucharist’
- In school, a ‘Liturgy of the Word’ does not include the Eucharist
- all Christian worship is done ‘in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
- when we take part in the Eucharist we celebrate God’s abundant love and faithfulness, offer all that we are and all that we do to God, commit ourselves to care for and be at peace with one another
