Composition

Text
Any form of communication
Writer
The person who wrote the text or message.
Purpose
The reason a writer chooses to communicate.
Audience
The receiver of the text or message.
Message
What the author is trying to get across to the audience.
Context/Culture
The timing, location, or relation to current events.
Logos
Appeals to logic and reasoning
ex: statistics
Ethos
Appeal to credibility, trustworthiness, and character
ex: a dentist recommending a toothpaste.
Pathos
Appeal to common ground and emotions.
ex: religion, morals, and tone.
Kairos
Appeal to timing and relevance
ex: time/ing, setting, current events, and sense of urgency.
Fiction
Stories that aren’t real. They are fake.
Indirect Characterization
The author shows you things about a character through thoughts and emotions
ex: interactions
Direct Characterization
When the author directly tells the audience about a character
Flat Character
1-2 personality traits, stereotypes
Round Character
Multiple personality traits, and feels like a real person.
Static Character
They don’t change throughout the story
Dynamic Character
The change a lot throughout the story, and learn a lesson.
Setting
The time and place a story is set.
ex: social context
First-person Point of View
I, me
Second-person Point of View
you, your
Third-person Limited Point of View
The thoughts and feelings of one character at a time.
Third-person Omniscient Point of View
You know the thoughts and feelings of all the characters.
