Q

Prophase

A

(pack) Chromosomes become visible, Centrioles move to opposite sides. Spindles form. Chromosomes attach to spindles at centromere. Nuclear membrane breaks down.

Q

Metaphase

A

(Middle) Spindle fully formed. Chromosomes line up in middle of cell (meta plate). Microtubules attach to centromeres to keep chromosomes in middle of the cell.

A

After mitosis. Cytoplasm of the cell divides (rest of cell)

Q

Telophase

A

(Two) Chromosomes reach opposite sides. The nuclear envelope forms. Spindle disappears. Chromosomes uncoil.

Q

Cytokinesis (Plants)

A

Forms “Cell plate” and divides down the middle without cell shape change.

3
Q

Why can’t a cell just keep growing larger rather than dividing?

A

surface area to volume ratio decreases, making it difficult to transport nutrients in and waste products out through the cell membrane,

Q

Cytokinesis (Animals)

A

Forms “cleavage furrow” pinches in the middle of the cell to divide (think peanut)

10
Q

What kinds of cells go to G0?

A

nerve cells, heart muscle cells, tissues cells, brain cells (cells that can’t replicate), mutated cells

11
Q

Function of Spindles

A

Pull apart the chromosomes to opposite ends of the cell.

12
Q

How do organisms get bigger?

A

Cell divison

13
Q

What are sister chromatids?

A

Identical copies of chromatids made during cell division

14
Q

What is the end result of mitosis?

A

The division of the cell nucleus

15
Q

How many chromosomes are in human somatic (body) cells?

A

46 chromosomes

16
Q

What is the centromere?

A

Where the chromosomes attaches to the spindles

17
Q

What is Chromatin?

A

The material DNA is made of. Loosely wound DNA around histone proteins.

18
Q

What protein does DNA wrap around?

A

Histone proteins.

19
Q

How can a body increase in size?

A

Cell growth and mitosis

20
Q

What is a major problem if a cell is too large

A

effect of diffusion of materials across cell membrane is decreased

21
Q

DNA is copied during what phase?

22
Q

What is the longest phase of the cell cycle

A

interphase

23
Q

What is a homologous pair of chromosomes

A

same genes in the same order. (Identical) Not XY or XX
