Study For The Test Flashcards
List the 3 statement that make up the original cell theory.
- All organisms are composed of one or more cells.
- The cell is the basic unit of life in all living things.
- All cells are produced by the division of preexisting cells.
Why use a microscope?
Some thing are to small to be seen with the naked eye.
Microscopes allows to magnify very tiny things that they become visible.
All to see detail.
What are the levels of organisations?
1. Atom 2 molecules or compounds 3. Organelle 4. Cell 5. Tissue 6. Organ 7. Organ system 8. Organism
What are cells?
The cells basically builds block of life
What are tissues?
Tissues are a group of similar cells that work together to carry out a special job.
What are organ?
Organ is a group of tissues that work together to do a job.
What is an organ system?
A organ system is a group of organs that work together to do a certain job.
What is an organism?
An organism is all organ system working together.
What are organelles?
Organelles are tiny structure inside cells that perform a specific function.
What is a nucleus?
The nucleus is the control centre of the cell. The DNA contained in the nucleus controls all cell activities.
What is a mitochondrion (plural is mitochondria)?
The mitochondrion is the power-house of the cell, producing all of the energy needed for the cell.
What is a cell membrane?
Cell membrane covers the whole cells. It controls what is allowed into or out of the cell.
What is a vacuole?
The vacuole is a storage place for wanted or unwanted substances in the cell.
What is a cytoplasm?
A cytoplasm is a watery filling of the cell that holds and supports the cell organelles.
What is endoplasmic reticulum?
The er allows materials pass easily through the cell.
What is ribosomes?
The ribosomes are factories that produce the protein in the cells.
What is golds apparatus (golgi body)?
The ga package proteins made by the cell for transport into other organelles organelles called vesicles.
What is the lysosomes?
The lysosomes are the garbage disposal units that get rid of waste in the cells.
What are they 5 kingdoms of living things?
- Animalia (animals)
- Plantae (plants)
- Fungi
- Protista
- Monera
What is the prokaryotic cells?
It has no nucleus or any membrane-bound organelles.
It is a monera.
Kingdom monera contains blue-green algae and bacteria
What is eukaryotic cells?
The cells contain membrane-bound organelles.
The cells contain clear nucleus.
All other kingdoms contain cells which are eukaryotic.
Why be multicellular?
Multicellular organisms can grow much longer that single celled organisms are. Much more complex because they have various cell types that can perform specialised function.
What is the cell wall?
It is the shape and structure. Human don’t need cell wall, have a main bone.
What is a chloroplasts?
Chloroplasts are the organelles where photosynthesis takes place.
Carbon dioxide + water —> glucose + oxygen
What is mitosis?
Mitosis (cell division) is involved in growth, repair and replacement of body cells.
What is cells division?
Cell division is a process that smoothly flows through a of identifiable stages.
What are the phases of Mitosis?
- Interphase
- Prophase
- Metaphase
- Anaphase
- Telophase
Cytokinesis (splitting of cells)
What is interphase?
During this time the cells would be carrying out the specific duties of that particular cells.
At the end of interphase, the DNA replicate.
What is prophase
In prophase, the chromosomes become visible aa they shorten and thicken. The membrane covering the nucleus breaks down.
What is the metaphase?
In metaphase, the chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell.
What is the anaphase?
In anaphase the spindle fibres contract and pull the chromosomes to the ends of the cell.
What is the telophase?
In animal cells the cell wall pinches in.
In plant cells a cells plate forms across the centre to form two new cells.
