Study and Book readings Flashcards
How do Zhong and Devoe believe fast food impacts our behavior?
-It makes us more likely to go for choices resulting in immediate gain over long term gain
Describe one study from Zhong and Devoe
-Experimenters exposed participants to fast food
-Ps were asked questions concerning when they would want to receive money ie 50 bucks now or 100 in a few days
-Ps were found more likely to choose the fiscally inferior option when exposed to fast food
IV, DV, and Results of Zhong and Devoe Study
IV: Those exposed to fast food vs. those who were not
DV: whether the Ps chose options more fiscally secure vs fiscally irresponsible choices
Results; If exposed to fast food, then Ps were more likely to choose money now over later
What are incremental and entity theories of personality.
Incremental theory of personality- The belief that people can change.
Entity Theory of Personality- The belief that people cannot change who they are or their beliefs
Describe one study from Rattan and Dweck about the effect of implicit theory on confronting bias.
-In the first study. experiments told Ps they were part of a digital-first impression study
-The experimenter was actually the chatter
Ps were ethnic and racial minorities
-Were given a questionnaire to test which theory of personality they more closely associated with
-After being texted a prejudiced comment, Ps were told to respond if they wanted
-Tested to see if more people who believed people could change would confront the individual
Describe what prosecutor mode is when its comes to our beliefs
-Happens when we see flaws in people’s reasoning
-We try and prove others wrong to make ourselves seem more correct
What does it mean to be in scientist mode?
-To only focus on the truth itself
-Constant awareness of limits in own understanding
-Doubt what’s known, be curious of what is not
What role does humility have in thinking like a scientist?
-Being upfront of what you don’t know allows for further fain of knowledge as well as the first step in rethinking previously held beliefs
Dunning-Kreuger Effect
Bias where people with limited info on a topic overestimate their knowledge on a topic
ie Managers overestimating their abilities in the workplace
Imposter Syndrome
-Underestimation of one’s abilities or knowledge in a certain area when rationally there is no reason to worry
ie feeling like an imposter at a new job/school/social event
2 reasons imposter syndrome is bad
-We can become unsure in our abilities overall
-Can lead to feeling negative emotions about self
1 argued reason for Imposter Syndrome being helpful
-It can motivate someone to work harder to disconfirm imposter syndrome
Totalitarian Ego
-Keeps out informations when it threatens our core beliefs
How does the totalitarian ego prevent us from re-thinking?
-Reconfirms beliefs by poking holes in threatening information
-Only focuses on information that bolsters present belief
What 2 forms of detachment help us rethink opinions?
1.) Detaching one’s past self from the present self
2.) Detaching our values from our opinions
