Study Flashcards
What is fire?
The light and heat that is generated by a self sustaining exothermic chemical reaction.
Called combustion.
What are the three points of the fire triangle in or to achieve the chemical reaction?
Oxygen
Heat
Fuel
How much oxygen is contained in normal air?
21%
Heat can be spread by?
Conduction (Heat passing through an object)
Convection (Heat rising)
Radiation (heat pushing out)
What are the three types of fuels?
Liquid
Solid
Gas
What is pyrolysis?
The decomposition of a material bought about by heat.
What temperature does smoke ignite at?
600-650
What are the five stages of fire development?
Beginning/Incipient - Initial stage. Overall temp in room not affected
Free Burning - Fire growth, more beyond first fuel
Flashover - Transition from free burning and full fire
Post flashover - Fire continues to burn with maximum energy
Decay - Starting to run out of fuel
What are types of indicators in a compartmental fire
Lines of Demarcation - Areas between affected area and adjacent unaffected areas
Smoke levels - Point where fire got to
V Patterns - Fire burns in a cone shape and generally spreads upwards and outwards
Pour pattern - Formed by ignitable liquids
Trailers - Any combustible or flammable material that has been used to spread the fire from one point to another.
Spiralling on Concrete
Charring/Aligatoring
Bevelling
Glasss
Clean burn - Burnt away by direct flame contact
Bed lounge springs - Sagging means closer to the fire source
What temperature does aluminium melt at?
660 degrees
What are the four categories of ignition?
Flame
Arc
Spark
Heated Object
What is flashpoint?
When temperature is sufficient to produce enough vapour in the air to reach the lower flammability limit, the lowest temperature is called the flashpoint
What is the minimal level of PPE
Police issue overalls Approved half mask negative pressure respirator Police issue leather boot or gum boots Hard hat Leather gloves Eye protection
What are the main hazards at fires (5 I’s)
Inhalation
Ingestion
Impact
Irritants
What are the four types of compartmental fires?? ANIU
Accidental - Not deliberate
Natural - Fire occurs without human intervention
Incendiary - Deliberate act
Undetermined ???
