Study 15 Flashcards
What storage does the human body have for food?
- Limited amounts of Carbohydrate
- High levels of fat & protein
What fuel is released from the stores when required?
- Glucose is the first preference (Brain’s only fuel)
- Fat stores = next best choice
- Protein is not used for energy less unless despereate
What are Nutrients?
Substance in food that provides energy to the body
What does BMR mean and do?
Basal Metabolic Rate
Energy used while asleep (supine)
-(Sleeping)
What is Good Nutrition?
A well-balanced diet combined with regular physical activity.
What is Poor Nutrition?
- Reduced immunity to disease.
- Impaired physical and mental development.
- Reduced productivity.
What is Energy?
- Amount of work required to change the state of a Physical system.
- ATP stores energy.
What does RMR mean and do?
Resting Metabolic Rate
The minimum energy required for normal daily activity is affected by age, sex, body size, and stress
-(Resting)
What do Carbohydrates do?
Source of energy.
- Stored in the muscle and liver as glycogen.
- Glucose that is not stored will be oxidized.
What does Protein do?
- Is only used as a fuel when Carbohydrates and Fat stores are low.
- Mostly found in the muscles.
- Required for growth and repair of muscles.
What are Lipids?
The richest form of dietary energy.
What do Lipids do?
- Required for immune health and absorption of some vitamins.
- The largest source of stored energy in the body.
What does TEF mean and do?
Thermic Effect of Food
- Dependent on the type of food consumed.
- Fat has the lowest effect (easy to store)
- Protein has the highest effect (most detailed synthesis process)
- (Food digestion)
What does TEA mean and do?
Thermic Effect of Activity
- A component of energy expenditure.
- Spontaneous physical activity.
- Includes shivering and fidgeting.
- (Daily living)
Average energy intake for adults?
8,700kj
