To investigate whether adolescents chose their friends based on similar alcohol use (selection explanation) or whether they adjusted their alcohol consumption to fit with the level of alcohol consumption of their friends (influence explanation).
Mundt (2012) - Sample
- 2563 adolescents (49% female, 51% male) in Wave 1
- Data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (1995-6)
- Aged 13-18 years old from middle schools and high schools in America
- Stratified sampling method - representative of American schools in terms of ethnicity, region and funding
Mundt - Sample (Strengths/Weaknesses)
《+》large sample gathered using stratified sampling, representative of American schools in terms of region, ethnicity and funding - findings into peer selection and influence on alcohol use in adolescents are generalisable to wider American population (population validity)
《-》Only used adolescents from schools in America - ethnocentric, aim is less generalisable to other cultures as the legal drinking age in America is 21 years old compared to other countries such as England which is 18 years old
