What was SDS about?
A
non-violent protest, aims included equality, economic justice, peace and democracy

What did SDS do?
A
- staged demonstration on campus and went to work alongside SNCC
- campaigns for things such as : free school lunches, better education and more participation in local politics
- After 1965, SDS students campaigned to give uni students greater say on courses and how uni was run
- Opposition to Vietnam War became one of their main focuses
- 1965 - SDS organised first major demonstration and group was recognised as anti-war
- Many members of SDS took part in civil rights sit ins and freedom rides 1961-62

A
- 150 colleges involved SDS, then rose to 400 and then 100,000 by the end of the 1960s.
- Membership dramatically increased in 1966 because of Opposition to Vietnam War

- Increase in birth rate after WW” sue to economic upturn meant more students were in higher education
- Society had to listen to their views as there were so many of them

A
- Many white and black students took part in the civil right protests
- had used experience to organise protests, using similar methods to highlight other parts of society they weren’t happy with
- CRM inspired groups who believed they were facing similar prejudice and discrimination (Hispanic Americans)
