Stucture and Bonding Flashcards
What is a proton?
A positively charged subatomic particle found in the nucleus
What is a neutron?
Uncharged subatomic particle found in the nucleus (except hydrogen)
What is an electron?
Negatively charged subatomic particle orbiting the nucleus
What is the mass number?
Sum of protons plus neutrons (top number)
What is the atomic number?
Number of protons or electrons (bottom num)
What is the complete electronic configuration?
1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s² 3p⁶ 4s² 3d¹⁰
What is noble gas configuration?
A full outer shell of electrons (most stable)
What is a giant ionic lattice?
An arrangement of positive ions and negative ions in a regular 3D pattern
What is a cation?
Positively charged ion (lost electrons)
What is an anion?
Negatively charged ion (gained electron)
What is ionic bonding between?
Metal and non metal (giant ionic lattice)
What affects the strength of the ionic bond?
- Ionic charge
- Ionic radius
What creates a stronger electrostatic attraction?
- Smaller ions with higher charges
What is a covalent bond?
A shared pair of electrons electrostatically attracted to both nuclei
What is a dative bond?
Covalent bond where both electrons are given from one atom
