Structures passing through the diaphragm Flashcards
At what level does the esophagus pass through the diaphragm?
Through the right crus of the diaphragm at the level of TX, just to the left of aortic hiatus.
What structures pass through the esophageal hiatus other than the esophagus?
Anterior and Posterior Vagal Trunks
At where does the hemiazygos vein go through the diaphragm?
It passes through the left crus of the diaphragm
What is the course of thoracic splanchnic nerves through the diaphragm?
These nerves pass through the left and the right crura
What is the passage of the aorta through the diaphragm?
Between the crura, posterior to the median arcuate ligament, it is at the level of TXII vertebrae just to the left of the midline.
What structures pass through the aortic hiatus other than aorta?
The thoracic duct and the azygos vein
What structures pass through the central tendon of the diaphragm?
Inferior Vena Cava and right phrenic nerve through the caval opening.
Left phrenic nerve anterior the central tendon at the left side of the diaphragm.
At what level; does the IVC pass through the diaphragm?
Vertebral level TVIII
What structure lies posterior to the medial arcuate ligament? Which fascia of the muscle thickens to form the medial arcuate ligament?
Sympathetic trunk lies posterior to the MAL.
Psoas Major
What structure lies anterior to the diaphragm?
Superior epigastric vessels
Attachment of the right crus?
The bodies of the vertebrae LI to LIII and intervening intervertebral discs
Attachment of the left crus?
The bodies of the vertebrae LI and LII and intervening intervertebral discs
What are the two crura connected by?
Median Arcuate ligament
Where is the medial arcuate ligament is attached to?
The vertebral bodies of LI and LII (medial)
Transverse process of LI (lateral)
What is the lateral arcuate ligament and what is its attachment?
The thickening of the fascia of the muscle Quadratus Lumborum.
It is attached medially to the transverse process of LI and laterally to the rib XII.
What structures anchor the diaphragm is anchored to the lumbar vertebrae?
The crura which blend with the anterior longitudinal ligament of the vertebral column.
