Structures of the Nervous System Flashcards
> Largest part of the brain.
Uppermost layer of the brain.
Controls highest levels of thoughts, including judgment, memory, association and critical thinking.
It also processes sensations and controls all voluntary muscle activity.
Cerebrum
Division of the nervous system which contains the brain and spinal cord.
Central Nervous System
Connects the brain and spinal cord. Controls functions necessary for survival.
> Made up of 3 parts (midbrain, pons, medulla oblongata).
Brainstem
Basic cells of the nervous system which allows different parts of the body to communicate with each other.
Neurons
The second largest part of the brain. “Coordinates muscular activity” and balance for smooth and steady movements.
Cerebellum
The space between two neurons.
Synapse
Carries nerve impulses toward the brain.
Ascending Nerve Tract
Layers of connective tissue that enclose the brain and spinal cord.
Meninges
Includes coughing and sneezing, responses to painful stimuli, and deep tendon reflexes.
Reflex actions
Controls vital body functions
Hypothalamus
Controls basic survival functions
Medulla oblongata
