Structures/Functions Flashcards
Coordinates immune defenses and kill infected cells on contact.
T-Cells
Complex proteins that normally circulate in the blood in an inactive form but are activated by contact with an antigen. It is cells combine with antibodies to ward off pathogens.
Complement Cell/System
Stores extra erythrocytes. Has major hemolytic function. Is a sac-like mass of lymphoid tissue located in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen.
Spleen
White blood cells that specialize so they can attack specific antigens.
Lymphocytes
A type of leukocyte that surrounds and kills invading cells. This type of cell also removes dead cells and stimulates the action of other immune cells.
This is a cell that protects the body by eating other cells.
Macrophage
aka “Nasopharyngeal Tonsils”. Located in the Nasopharynx.
Adenoids
a disease-fighting protein created by the immune system in response to the presence of a specific antigen.
Antibodies
Act as filters to harmful substances from lymph cells, as lymph flows through the node.
Lymph Nodes
Lymph nodes located along the “sides of the neck”.
Cervical Lymph Nodes
Lymphatic tissue that hangs from the lower part of the cecum.
Vermiform Appendix
A physical barrier that prevents invading organisms from entering the body.
Intact Skin
The process by which phagocytes eat and destroy substances.
Phagocytosis
