been vs gone
both are participles used in present perfect
been = to go somewhere and come back in the past
“I’ve been to Australia”
gone = to go somewhere but don’t necesarily return
“I’ve gone to the market, do you need anything?”
‘tell’ doesn’t mean ‘tell’
Differences
We can use ‘can tell’ to talk about differences.
It’s obvious
Use ‘can tell’ with the pronoun you to talk about something that many people should find obvious.
Prevent vs Avoid
- Prevent = to stop doing
- Avoid = to miss
Every time vs All the time
- All the time = happens even when you are not present
- Every time = Repeated personal experiences
During vs While
- During + noun
- While + subject/verb OR verb-ing
Very vs really vs absolutely
-can’t use ´very´ with non-gradable (i.e.
Until vs by
- until = period of time
- by = deadline
Because, as, since
- all for reason
- because = focus on reason
- as/since = focus on result (more formal)
