Lorca’’s Andalucían rural tragedy Yerma was written in the 1930’s. Influenced by symbolism and expressionism Lorca’s play is a poetic tragedy reflecting the theme of strict social indoctrination, infertility and the role of women in Catholic 1930’s Spain. The play sees the gradual mental decline of the protagonist Yerma, due to her inability to conceive amidst the gossip and pressures of rural life.
