Structured populations Flashcards

1
Q

What are matrix models used for?

A

To describe dynamics in structured populations. Such as survival and development, and fertility.

P = remain in stage

G = development

F = fertility (avg no of offspring)

Q

Analysis of matrix models?

A

Population growth rate - can see if endangered, or if the rate is increasing too quickly or normally.

Stable population structure - proportion of population in each class at equilibrium.

Sensitivities - how the structure changes as each number in matrix is altered.

Q

What happens when demographic rates change?

A

Population structure changes.

Resulted in the one baby policy in China being abolished, as they needed to deal with the aging population. Also had too many males. Since the citizens of China are living longer and having fewer children, the growth of the population imbalance was expected to continue.

Q

How do you categorise individuals?

A

Usually categorise individuals into broad classes: young, prime aged and decrepit.

Q

Why do distributions change?

A

Mass is removed - death/emigration

Mass is added - birth/immigration

Mass is transformed - development

Q

What do the population models tell you?

A

Ecological and evolutionary change can often occur at the same time.

A wide range of eco-evolutionary dynamics can occur

Environmental change alters the course of evolution and population dynamics.
