What is clinical audit?
A review of an individual or institution’s current practice against set standards of best practice.
Why are audits important?
Without audits, individuals and institutions would not be able to ensure that they were following best practice.
GMC Good Medical Practice – should take part in regular audit of practice
Patients – ensure they receive highest level of care
Doctors - helps identify problems and implement change
What is the definition of research?
The systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions.
What is the difference between QI and audit?
Audit focused on assessing performance against standards
QI focused on improving services by making small, repeated measurable changes. Less focus on whether the service meets defined standards
What are the different types of audit?
Retrospective/prospective
Local/national
Individual clinician/departmental
