- penguin motif played by harp & low organ accompanied by very high violins playing a chord cluster - adds sense of unease & dissonance to accompaniment

- bars 20 - 25 penguin motif is played as a waltz in triple time as max sees the penguin’s ‘clown gang’
- at bar 26 the penguin has stopped his work and looks over to max - music has an open 5th chord and penguin motif has been augmented
- from bar 29 harp plays main tune accompanied by the falling thirds idea in celesta and descending countermelody in violins
- max is tempting oswald with a fish just as bass clarinet takes prominence in the music (b 37)

- interplay between bass clarinet and harp using arpeggios
- b 44 contains quick flurry as oswald tries to snatch the fish
- b 46 a trill on flute and perfect cadence (V) leads to next section

- music picking up pace as max ures oswald downstairs with fish, covering his face
- firmly in Cmin, music descends in pitch as they come down the stairs
- augmented chord is used in contraty motion b 51 as vibraphone descendsand low strings ascend
- b 52 there is a typical elfman idea of using a cluster chord with a crescendo
- trumpet enters half way through the bar leading to a triumphant change to Cmaj (b 53&54) where fanfare-like finish is heard as Oswald is revealed & greeted by crowd of election supporters
