Climax
Turning point of the story.
Conflict
Struggle between different forces.
Foreshadowing
Clues or hints of events to come.
Protagonist
The hero or main character.
Antagonist
The opponent or rival of the hero.
Narrator
The person telling a story.
Dialogue
Conversation between characters.
Point of view
The perspective from which a story is told.
First person narration
Narrator uses I or me.
Third person narration
Narrator describes characters as he, she, or they. Does not know inner thoughts.
Third person omniscient
Narrator knows inner thoughts and feelings of all the characters.
Mood
Atmosphere of a literary work.
Tone
Attitude or feeling conveyed to the reader.
Theme
Message or meaning in a literary work.
Apostrophe
A writer addresses an object, idea, or person who is dead or absent.
Dialect
A way of speaking that is characteristic of a certain social group or of the inhabitants of a certain geographical area.
Flashback
A scene that interrupts the chronological sequence of events to show something that happened earlier.
Foil
A character who acts as a contrast to another character.
Imagery
The use of language to evoke a picture in the reader’s mind.
Verbal Irony
A character says one thing but means another.
Situational Irony
The outcome of a situation is opposite to what a character expects.
Dramatic Irony
The audience has important knowledge that the characters don’t have.
Symbol
A person, place, object, or experience that stands for something more than what it is.
Soliloquy
In drama, a long speech made by a character while no other characters are on stage.
