Q

Describe how the writer uses structure in the phrase “The dwarf with his hands on backwards / sat” to show that the beggar should be pitied rather than ignored.

A

Enjambment emphasises the word “sat”, by placing it at the beginning of the second line. This monosyllabic introduction draws attention to the fact that the beggar has to sit on the ground outside.
This makes the beggar seem like a character that ought to be pitied rather than ignored.

‘Enjambment’, the continuation of a sentence without a pause beyond the end of a line, couplet, or stanza. Often used to emphasise certain words, by placing them deliberately at the beginning of the end of a line.

‘Monosyllabic’, consisting of one syllable.

Describe how the writer uses structure in the phrase “the cleverness” to contribute to the ironic tone.

A

Enjambment highlights/emphasises the idea of the priest’s opinion of Giotto’s ‘cleverness’ on a line of its own.
Contributes to ironic tone and suggests that the ‘cleverness’ is perhaps a negative thing, in this context, as the teachings of God/Jesus clearly have not been communicated to this crowd of tourists.

The priest seems to display a condescending and overarching complex - preferring the art over the teachings of god.
