Structure of water + hydrogen bonding Flashcards
water is composed of what two elements? what is the ratio?
oxygen and hydrogen
1:2 ratio
what is a covalent bond?
equal sharing of electrons between non-metals
-both octet is filled
Covalent bonds can result in
polarity
water molecule is polar bc..
a partially positive hydrogen and an negative oxygen
what is a hydrogen bond?
a weak bond interaction between the negative and positive regions of two separate molecules/ Water can form hydrogen bonds with other water molecules or charge molecules
Cohesion
When two of the SAME molecules form hydrogen bonds with each other.
eg. water molecules bonding together ( LIKE bond with LIKE)
Adhesion
When two DIFFERENT molecules form hydrogen bonds with each other.
eg. and the walls of a xylem of a plant
surface tension
is a result of increased hydrogen bonding forces between water molecule at the surface
eg, a water droplet on a penny, small insects and objects able to float on water
Why does ice float?
water’s cohesive property allows for unique hydrogen bond interactions to occur when water is in a solid state, making ice ( solid water) less dense than liquid water
high heat capacity
water’s cohesive property allows it to absorb a lot of thermal energy before changing chemical states, resisting sudden changes in temperature
Capillary action
is a result of both adhesive and cohesive properties of water
