Structure Of The Heart Flashcards
Which ventricle has thicker walls? Why?
The left ventricle.
Because the left side requires much more muscle to generate a greater pressure to pump blood around the whole body.
What are the functions of the coronary arteries?
A network that supplies the heart with blood. This blood provides the heart with oxygen and glucose.
What is the function of the atrioventricular valves?
- separate the atria from the ventricles
- allow blood to flow from the atria to the ventricles
- prevent the back flow of blood
What is the function of the tendons that connect the atrioventricular valves to the ventricle walls?
Function; to stop the atrioventricular valves from inverting when blood pressure builds up in the ventricles during ventricular contraction.
2 properties of tendons.
Tendons are NON Muscular and CANNOT Contract.
The vena cava carries what kind of blood?
Deoxygenated blood.
The aorta carries what kind of blood?
Oxygenated blood.
Pulmonary vein carries what kind of blood?
Oxygenated blood.
Pulmonary artery carries what kind of blood?
Deoxygenated blood.
Where are semilunar valves found and what is their function?
Found; entrance to the aorta and pulmonary artery.
Function; blood under high blood pressure is drawn back towards the ventricles so the semilunar valve prevents this.
Where are elastic fibres found and what is their function?
Found; in the second layer of veins and arteries.
Function; allows vessels to stretch and recoil.
