Structure Of The Heart Flashcards
What is the function of the aorta?
The main artery leading away from the left ventricle carrying oxygenated blood to all parts of the body.
What is the function of the pulmonary artery?
Carries deoxygenated blood from heart to lungs.
What is the function of the pulmonary vein?
Carries oxygenated blood from lungs to heart.
What is the function of the left atrium?
They receive oxygenated blood from the lungs via pulmonary veins.
What is the function of the right atrium?
They receive deoxygenated blood from the body via superior and inferior vena cava.
What is the function of the bicuspid valve?
This is situated between the left atrium and the left ventricle, and prevents blood from flowing backwards.
What is the function of the tricuspid valve?
This is situated between the right atrium and the right ventricle, and prevents blood from flowing backwards.
What is the function of the semi lunar valve?
These are found between the left ventricle and the aorta artery, and the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery. They permit blood to flow into the arteries from the ventricles. They also prevent blood from flowing backwards.
What is the function of the superior vena cava?
Vein that receives deoxygenated blood from the upper body and empties into the right atrium.
What is the function of the inferior vena cava?
Vein that receives deoxygenated blood from the lower body and empties into the right atrium.
What is the function of the coronary artery?
These supply blood to the heart muscles, allowing the heart to constantly contract.
