Structure of the Heart Flashcards
What is the function of the coronary arteries?
- supplies oxygenated blood to the heart muscle
What is the function of the superior vena cava?
- Drains blood from the upper portion of the body.
What is the function of the Inferior vena cava?
Drains blood from the lower part of the body
What is the function of the right atrium?
- Pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs
What is the function of the right ventricle?
- Contracts fully and pumps deoxygenated blood through the semi lunar valves into the pulmonary artery
What is the function of the pulmonary artery?
- allows the blood to travel from the right ventricle to the lungs
What is the function of the pulmonary veins?
- where blood flows from lungs to left atrium
What is the function of the left atrium?
- works with the ventricles to pump oxygenated blood to the rest of the body.
What is the function of the carotid arteries?
- transports oxygen blood from the heart to the brain and head
What is the function of the left ventricle?
- where blood flow from the left atrium to body
What is the function of the semi-lunar valves?
- prevents the backflow of blood into the heart
What is the function of the atrioventricular valves?
connects the atria to the ventricles to stop blood flowing back into the atria when the ventricles contract.
