Q

What are the 4 main layers the Earth is made up of?

A
- the crust (lithosphere)
solid, thin (~30km)
- the mantle
semi-liquid (~3000km)
- outer core
liquid (~2000km)
- inner core

Q

What are convection currents?

A

Convection currents transfer heat from one place to another.

As the gooey magma in the mantle is heated, it rises and cools near the surface, and then drops.

Q

What are the types of plate boundaries?

A
- Divergent plate boundary
[plates moving away from each other]
oceanic spreading ridge
continental rift zone
- Convergent plate boundary
[plates colliding against each other]
oceanic-oceanic convergence
continental-continental convergence
continental-oceanic convergence
- Transform plate boundary
[plates slide past each other]

Q

What are tectonic plates?

A

Tectonic plates are smaller pieces of crust that float on the mantle.
Convection currents in the mantle cause the plates to move.
