Structure of the atom Flashcards
How do the three particles behave when in an electric field?
Neutrons are undeflected as they are electrically neutral.
protons are attracted to the negative pole while electrons are attracted to the positive pole
if their initial speeds are the same, electrons are deflected to a greater extent as they are lighter
describe structure of an atom
atoms are small and spherical
protons and neutrons are found in the nucleus while electrons are found outside
number of protons = number of electrons
define isotopes
atoms of the same element with the same number of electrons and protons but different number of neutrons
define mass number
sum of the number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
define proton/atomic number
number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
