Structure Of Skin Flashcards
What is the Epidermis?
The epidermis is the outer skin layer made up of the stratified squamous epithelium. It has three layers.
What are the three layers of the epidermis?
1, Cornified layer 2, Granular layer 3, Malphigian layer
What is the cornified layer?
- Contains keratin an effective waterproof layer. - Protected body from microbial infection, mechanical and thermal damage.
What is the Granular Layer?
Replaces dead cells from the cornified.
What is the Malphigian layer?
- Cells undergo cell division here. - Contains melanin to protect genetic material from UV radiation.
Where is the Dermis located?
The much thicker layer of the dermis is the inner layer of the skin.
How is the dermis connected to the epidermis?
The dermis consists of papillary and reticular regions and is connected to the epidermis by a basement membrane.
What is the purpose of Blood vessels in the Dermis?
It regulates the temperature of the blood and body.
What is the purpose of the Sebaceous gland?
It secretes sebum which acts as a lubricant.
What is the purpose of the sweat gland?
It produces sweat which is an excretory product as well as cooling.
What is the purpose of hair?
Hair is involved in heat control.
What is the purpose of Erector muscle?
This muscle contracts and relaxes to control position of hair.
What are the purposes of receptors in the dermis?
Detects changes such as heat temperature and pressure.
What is the purpose of the elastic fibre within the dermis?
It has collagen which affects elasticity of skin.
What is the inner most layer of the skin?
Hypodermis.
