Structure of prokaryotic cells and of viruses Flashcards
1
Q
Prokaryotic cells have:
A
- cytoplasm that lacks membrane bound organelles
- smaller ribosomes
- no nucleus just single strand DNA
- cell wall that contains muriein, a glycoprotein
2
Q
They also have:
A
1 or more plasmids
capsule surrounding cell
1 or more flagella
3
Q
Viruses
A
acellular and non-living
4
Q
Structure of viruses
A
- contain nucleic acids but can only replicate inside host cell
- They are enclosed in a protein coat called the CAPSID
- Some viruses, like the HIV virus are surrounded by a lipid envelope. These have attachment proteins which are essential to allow the virus to identify and attach to a host cell
