Structure of Metals and Alloys Flashcards
What is Metallic Bonding
Attraction between the positive metal ion and delocalised electrons.
What is an Alloy
Mixtures of metals with metals or a non-metal e.g. stainless steel is a mixture of iron and carbon
What is the structure of Metallic Bonding
Layers of metal positive ions surrounded by delocalised electrons
What is the structure of an Alloy
Irregular layers
Explain the property of Conduct electricity metals
Delocalised electrons are free to move and carry the charge
through the metal.
Explain the property of Conducts thermal energy metals
Delocalised electrons move Energy transferred
Explain the property of Strong High melting point metals
Strong attraction between the metal positive ion and the
delocalised electrons, so lots of energy needed to overcome
attraction
Explain the property of Bent and shaped (malleable) metals
Layers of atoms are able to slide over each other.
Explain the property of Harder than pure metals (Alloys)
The atoms are different sizes. Layers are distorted and cannot
easily slide over each other.
