Q

What is a barrier method? Give some examples.

A

A physical layer that prevents water and oxygen from reacting with Fe. Some examples include paint, oil and plastic coatings.

Q

What is galvanising? Give some examples.

A

A form of protection which involves both sacrificial protection and a physical barrier. For example, coating an iron boat with zinc. It’s sacrificial protection because the oxygen will react zinc and it’s a physical barrier because it’s fully coated.

Q

What is sacrificial protection? Give some examples.

A

A form of protection where iron is protected by other more reactive metals, which oxygen will react with more preferably. For example, blocks of magnesium or zinc or scrap pieces.
