Structure Of Carbon Flashcards
1
Q
Structure of diamond
A
It is very hard
Each carbon atom has four covalent bonds.
Very high melting point from strong Covent bonds
Doesn’t conduct electricity because no free electrons
2
Q
Structure of graphite
A
Contains layers of carbon atoms, arranged in hexagons
Each carbon atom contains three covalent bonds
There are no covalent bonds between layers so they can mover over each other, this makes graphite soft and slippery
Lots of energy needed to break covalent bonds, so it has high melting point
Carbon atom has one election free to move so conducts electricity and thermal energy.
