Structure Of An Atom Flashcards
What is an atom?
The smallest amount of matter which retains its identity as a chemical element
What is everything made up of?
Atoms
Name the sizes of things largest to smallest
Planet, island, human, organ, cell, dna, atom
What is a subatomic particle?
A particle that is smaller then an atom
What are the subatomic particles in an atom
Proton, neutron, electron
What is a neutron?
A subatomic particle that has no charge and is found in the nucleus
What is a proton?
A subatomic particle that has a positive charge and is found in the nucleus
What is an electron?
A subatomic particle that has a negative charge. It orbits the nucleus in orbitals in shells
What is the mass number?
Amount of protons + amount of neutrons
What is the atomic number?
Amount of protons
How do you find out the amount of neutrons?
Mass number - atomic number
What 2 subatomic particles are the same in a neutral atom?
Electrons and protons
What is the rule of how many electrons fit into the first 3 shells of an atom
2,8,8
What is an isotope?
Two or more forms of chemical elements that have the same amount of protons but different amount of neutrons
Describe a proton?
+1 charge, 1 relative mass (amu), location = nucleus
Describe a neutron?
0 charge, 1 relative mass (amu), location = nucleus
Describe an electron?
-1 charge, 0 relative mass (Amu), location = orbitals
What is the overall charge of an atom?
Neutral because the amount of protons and electrons are the same
What is the nucleus?
Centre of an atom
What does the shell show?
The path of an electron as it goes around the nucleus
What is found in the nucleus?
Protons and neutrons
What does the electron do?
Travels around the nucleus
