Structure of alcohols Flashcards
What is a primary alcohol?
The OH is bonded to a primary carbocation
What is a secondary alcohol?
The OH is bonded to a secondary carbocation
What is a tertiary alcohol?
The OH is bonded to a tertiary carbocation
When do alcohols have a higher BP than alkanes?
They can form hydrogen bonds which are very strong
How does water solubility change as the chain length increases?
It decreases
Why does water solubility decrease as chain length increase?
The OH is the only part that interacts and as the chain length increases, the effect of the Oh decreases and the effect on the non-polar chain is more important
What is a solvent large alcohols dissolve in?
Hexane
Why are alcohols a good fuel?
They have a low BP, are flammable and are cheap
