Structure of a leaffffff Flashcards
Cuticle
Covered with wax to make it waterproof to prevent water loss
Upper epidermis
Single layer of cells covered by the cuticle that allow light to pass through
Palisade cells
The cells where photosynthesis take place
Spongy mesophyll
Has many air spaces that allow the movement of gasses
Lower epidermis
The layer where the stomata are found
Xylem
Plant vessels that transport water from roots to leaves
Phloem
These open and close the stomata
STOMATA
Tiny pores that allow oxygen and carbon dioxide in and out of the leaf
Chlorophyll
the green pigment found in palisade cells used to absorb light energy
Chloroplasts
this is where chlorophyll is stored
Glucose
the food that plants make
the reactants needed for photosynthesis
carbon dioxide gas, water, chlorophyll and light energy
Products of photosynthesis
glucose and oxygen gas
Photosynthesis
process where plants use chlorophyll and light energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and glucose
Respiration
The process by which cells break down simple food molecules to release the energy they contain.
