Structure + Function Of Neurons Flashcards
What does the sensory neuron do?
. Carries messages from the PNS to the CNS
.Carries messages from sensory receptors to the brain which are translated into sensations,
EG vision, taste, smell.
What does the relay neuron do?
. Connects sensory neuron the motor neuron and other relay neurons.
. Assists the brain in completing functions such as learning and decision making.
What does the motor neuron do?
. Connects the CNS to the muscles glands and organs
. for example touching a hot surface is received by the sensory neurons , relayed to the brain by relay neurons and the action of moving ur hand is produced by motor neurons.
Describe RN dendrites and axons.
SHORT dendrites, SHORT axons.
Make up 97% of all neurons, most in brain.
Describe MN dendrites and axons.
SHORT dendrites, LONG axons.
Describe SN dendrites and axons.
LONG dendrites, SHORT axons.
What do dendrites do?
Dendrites receive signals from other neurons, and are connected to the cell body or ‘control centre’
What is an Axon?
An axon is a long slender fibre that carries electrical impulses known as action potential away from the cell body towards the axon terminal where neurons end.
What are Axons surrounded by?
Myelin Sheath, which insulates the axon allowing the electrical impulse to travel faster down the axon terminal.
Myelin sheath is separated by nodes of ranvier which force the electrical impulse to jump along the axon.
