structure and role of neurons Flashcards
what is a neuron?
nerve cell - transmits electric and chemical signals/ messages in the body
role of dendrite
- branches of a neuron that transmit electrical impulses toward the cell body
- role in communication between neurons, allowing the brain to process info and respond to stimuli.
What is the role of the cell body of a neutron?
contains the nucleus and is responsible for maintaining cells functions and processes
What is the role of the axon in a neuron?
carries electrical impulses away from the the cell body to other neurons, muscles or glands
What is the myelin sheath and its function?
fatty layer that covers the axon - speeds up the transmission of electrical impulses and protects the axon
What are the synapses and their function?
junctions between the neurons where electrical signals are transmitted chemically using neurotransmitters
What are the role of neurotransmitters in neural communication?
neurotransmitters are chemicals that transmit signals across synapses from one neuron to another, influencing behaviour and bodily functions
