Structure and Function of the Body Flashcards
Chapter 6-18
anatomy
the study of the physical structure of the body and organs
physiology
the science of the function of cells, tissue, and organs
homeostasis
steady state (normal)
midline/midsagittal plane
divides the body into equal left and right parts
medial
anything toward the midline
lateral
anything away from the midline
proximal
nearness to the point of attachment (applicable to the arms, legs, fingers, and toes)
distal
distance away from the point of attachment (applicable to the arms, legs, fingers, and toes)
frontal/coronal plane
divides the body into front and back halves
anterior/ventral
the front
posterior/dorsal
the back
transverse plane
divides the body into the top half and bottom half
superior/cephalic
towards the head (above the line)
inferior/caudal
toward the feet (below the line)
body cavities
anterior (ventral) and posterior (dorsal)
four abdominal quadrants
RUQ, RLQ, LUQ, LLQ
nucleus
“the brain”
goli apparatus
digestion
mitochondria
the powerhouse (cellular respiration and enegry production)
epithelial tissue
form the body’s glands, cover the surface of the body, and lien cavities
connective tissue
Supporting structure, connecting other tissues together to form organs and body parts. Three categories conceive, supportive, fluid
Nerve tissue
found throughout the body
myelin sheath
is a sleeve (sheath) that’s wrapped around each nerve cell (neurons). It’s a protective layer of fat (lipids) and protein that coats the main “body” section of a neuron called the axon.
voluntary muscle
impulses from the brain (ex: skeletal muscle)
involuntary muscle
action occurs without control/ conscious awareness
central nervous system (CNS)
the brain and spinal cord
peripheral nervous system
nerves that connect the CNS to every organ and area of the body
autonomic nervous system
specialized part of the peripheral system (controls internal organs and other self-regulation body functions)
